When Woman’s Own Specials freelance writer Kirstin Chaplin contacted me to ask if I would share my thoughts about women over 40 having tattoos for the first time I happily obliged.

Now this got me to thinking about self- identity and why do we worry about what other people think of us. Age is irrelevant, meaning you can be 20, 30 50 or older as self-image is not limited to age or gender. Whether it’s getting a tattoo, dying your hair blue, or doing something radical why do we care so much about others opinions of us?
Self-images can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas. So when someone says “why on earth have you had that tattoo” and you’re not feeling confident it has you running to the GP for tattoo laser removal! Similarly, when you buy that “snazzy” little number and it then goes in the wardrobe still in the wrapper seeing the light of day once a year!
Why, because you compare and convince yourself how much better your attractive neighbour will look in it and she wins hands down. The dress then gets hidden behind your baggy winter coat. Yes Really!
So what else can you do?
One sure way to feel happier and improve your self- esteem is to accept yourself just as you are YES just as you are. Then based upon your own values which means what’s important to you like honesty or trust for example, focus on those values to take you where you want to be and be TRUE to yourself.
I know it’s hard but try NOT to compare yourself to others because your own standards are more important than theirs. Follow what you want and believe not just because you think you should but because it’s what YOU really want. And If that means you decide on having a tattoo whether your 40, 50, 60 or 70 as dame Helen Mirren is or wearing that “snazzy” little number then who are we to judge?
More importantly why on earth shouldn’t you?
